Hi!

Thank you so much for offering to write one of these awesome things. <3

To give you a broad picture of what I like in fic:

I like slash, gen, het and OT3s and polyfic.

I like fluffy and happy endings, but also love fics with bittersweet and open ended ones too.

Random other things I like: Political intrigue, banter, snark, competence, people finishing each others sentences and knowing each other's looks, backstory and pining.

Things I don't like so much: non-con, lifestyle BDSM, humiliation, embarrassment or otherwise intelligent characters acting stupid for no reason at all.

I am absolutely fine with AUs. Canon divergent or something else. Modern? Fairytale? Space? Sports? College? All good.

If you want more clues about what I like, you can check out my Tumblr.

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate! And I hope those that don't had/are having a nice, relaxing day. :D

Today was pretty excellent. We were at at my brother's girlfriend's parents' house for most of the day which could have been a little odd but on the whole was nice. There was sun and beer and wine and three courses of really good food well spread out throughout the day.

Also, a kitten! My brother bought his and his girlfriend's new kitten over when we were opening presents.

Cuteness under this cut )

And then I came home and there was Yuletide!

I got two lovely gifts! Which I really appreciate as I know as I was on the deadline pinch hits list.

Yuletide reveal! I wrote three things this year.

My original assignment was:

Been Holding Out So Long (1835 words) by faviconaworldinside
Fandom: State of Play (TV)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Cal McCaffrey/Della Smith
Characters: Cal McCaffrey, Della Smith, Dan Foster, Cameron Foster
Summary: Despite Cameron's protestations to the contrary, people did actually miss Cal.

I quite like how this came out. I think my Cal/Della feelings a bit odd within the small fandom, but I think this was subtle enough. I especially liked writing Cameron.

Thanks so much to [personal profile] stickmarionette for looking over this for me. <3

My pinch hit was:

Forces de la nature (1012 words) by faviconaworldinside
Fandom: A Place of Greater Safety - Hilary Mantel
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Camille Desmoulins/Comte de Mirabeau
Summary: He was a force of nature - not unlike Camille himself - even if sometimes it was the nature of quite some different place altogether.

This I admit, was a bit harder to write but I eventually settled on something (just sneaking in under the deadline) that I think worked out okay. Camille <3

And I also wrote a small treat:

Super(hero)nanny (300 words) by faviconaworldinside
Fandom: The Avengers (2012)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Phil Coulson
Summary: Agent Coulson tries to have a night off. The operative word there being 'tries.'

I've been in a weird mood all day. I've had the flat to myself since the 31st which on the whole has been awesome, but I also started missing having people around. But then at the same time people on the internet were really annoying me (just in general, no one on LJ) and I didn't feel I would be the best company either. So I sat on the balcony in the sunshine reading a history book and getting a little sunburnt. Things could have been worse. ;)

I have to go to work tomorrow. *sigh*

Back in Wellington!

I had a good time in Christchurch on the whole, but I am so glad to be a home. I've got the house to myself and I've made pizza, and eaten chocolate and there may have been a tiny bit of passionfruit vodka as well. I am then going to continue my re-watch of Band of Brothers (so good, and hi baby!Damian Lewis) because I am embracing an anti-social New Year's Eve. Whole-heartedly.

2011 has had its ups and downs from earthquakes and broken hometowns, to leaving the UK, to moving back to NZ to everything in between. I think my highlight was my trip to US - one I've been meaning to make since I was small - I want to go back so badly, but I am so grateful I got a chance to see it at all The lowlight is I imagine pretty self-explanatory. Oh, Christchurch.

I kept meaning to do a fandom end-of-year meme and it just never happened.

However, I did just see this general RL end of year meme pop up on my flist:

2011: broken hometowns, travelling, returning to NZ )

-

I may have watched all of Downton Abbey from S1 through to the Christmas Special while on holiday. Oops? ;) Lots of love. Matthew! Mary! Anna! Sybil! While I adore Matthew/Mary, I also see interesting femslash possibilities. Hmm. Anyway, it's awesome, and Maggie Smith is amazing. <3!

-

Yuletide must have kick-started my languishing writerly tendencies, because I wrote 350 words of H50 fic earlier today and I still really want to write something about Steve and Jenna because I remain fascinated by their friendship/relationship, and I'm totally going to sign up for [livejournal.com profile] picfor1000.

Talking of Yuletide: my recs are on pinboard. Some awesome fic, especially the @mayoremanuel one. That was fucking amazing, and made me order the book mentioned in the notes. Oh, and Blackadder at the Occupy movement - that was genius too.
aworldinside: (john sheppard laptop)
Hope everyone had/is having a great Christmas/holiday celebration of their choice/Sunday! :D

My day was low-key but nice. Got to meet my brother's new girlfriend and had a nice dinner, and then spent the afternoon in front of the TV watching gift DVDs. We had an awesome run actually. X-Men First Class (even more slashy on a second viewing, which I didn't think was possible), 5 episodes of Downton Abbey S1 (Sybil! Anna! Gwen! Matthew! - yes I am getting sucked in) and then the ultimate in Christmas movies was on TV, Die Hard. It was even topped off by TV4 playing 'Abed's Uncontrollable Xmas.'

And now there is Yuletide.

I got given this awesome Carmen Sandiego world-building fic.

Player Status: Offline (2323 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Carmen Sandiego, Zack (Carmen Sandiego), Ivy (Carmen Sandiego), The Chief
Summary:

The world doesn't stop running when the Player is away from the keyboard.

So well done, and has little links to let you learn more, and I loved it. I did not expect to get this request and I'm so happy I did. :D Love Yuletide.

Now, allll the fic. And possibly some Boxing Day shopping.

Dear Yuletide author,

Hi! Thank you so much for offering to write one of these awesome things. <3 Apologies for the delayed letter.

'Ship wise, I like slash (both sorts), gen and het. Please don't feel you have to make it 'shippy if you'd rather keen if more gen. If you are making it 'shippy, I don't like incest, rape, non-con, and I do like a good threesome. But don't feel you have to make it porn-y (writing porn is hard, dude), at all.

I am okay with character death and angst. Don't feel you have to make it all rainbows and happy endings if that's not where your muse is directing you. However, saying that I am also a huge sap and love my happy fluffy fic as well.

Random other things I like: Political intrigue, banter, competence, backstory, and snark.

Also, I am absolutely fine with AUs and crossovers. Love them in fact. If you see crossover potential with another fandom you know I'm familiar with, go with it.

2. Yuletide sign-up complete. \o/ I was struggling a little for a 4th request but I found one and now I'm pretty excited. The list of fandoms that ended up in my bucket offer was hilarious. To say it was diverse is understating it. My letter will be forth-coming.

3. There exists in the world a photo of Alex O'Loughlin with his tattoos and his scruff and his everything playing an electric guitar. Not helping, Alex. A WORLD of not helping. Ngh. *brain offline*

4. My laptop scared the hell out of me about 2 hours ago. It beeped and then shut down and then ... nothing. Nothing at all. Cue rending of garments. I finally tried plugging it in without its battery and yes, we have laptop. So it's a battery thing. I'm pretty relieved - although with all things Apple it's not going to be the cheapest thing to replace.

5. I start my new job tomorrow (it's a contract through to the end of March). I was reading up on some things and ahahaha I'm going to be busy and at work far earlier than I am normally. All the coffee. All the coffee. I don't like early morning meetings ... that's going to have to change.

6. Also I just need to say this:

Dear New Zealand,

I hope that the poll showing NZ First closing in on 5% was a grievous statistical error and in no way reflects your current voting intentions.

Did we not learn from last time?! We do not need Winston Peters back in Parliament. *shudders*

Yours in bafflement,

[personal profile] aworldinside

Edit: As [personal profile] china_shop rightly points out in the comments, it would potentially stop National getting an outright majority which is indeed not a bad thing. I just really dislike the idea of Winston in a position with such power all over again, but I guess, democracy can be messy and a proportional voting system is still better than anything else.

Yuletide reveal!

I wrote two things.

Evading Ambassadors: an Emperor's Guide. (Vorkosigan Saga, Miles/Gregor, PG) for cimorene

My assignment. This fic changed on me quite a few times before I settled on a more comedic route, but with a little bit of bittersweet at the end, because in my mind, barring a complete AU and a complete change in Barrayar culture, it's hard to imagine Miles/Gregor as anything really long-term. I like how it came out, mostly, and my recipient and others seemed to. (Although I do admit writing in one of the more 'popular' Yuletide fandoms meant it was read by more people than a lot of my previous Yuletide stories, so I think that inflated the comment and kudos count). I did love writing from Gregor's POV though. I <3 him.

Soldiering On (Fringe, Peter, Peter/OIivia, PG) for Ishyko

A little treat. I wanted to write some Fringe, and I do in retrospect admit this may have not been exactly what the prompt-er wanted. It's post-Marionette Peter, so it isn't exactly happy. At all really. I do think there was a tiny bit of hope at the end. Maybe?

I can see there being more Peter-fic in my future. January 21st is still such a long time away.

--

New Years Eve was good in the end. Casual drinks at a friends. Quite a lot of vodka and rum and a little bit of drama (not mine) but in the end I awoke hangover free today and it was good to catch up with people. Saw flashes in the sky from the fireworks. All in all, not a bad night.

Today has been super lazy. I listened to Edgar Wright's 6Music show this morning (with guests Simon Pegg and Nick Frost), which was awesome and had lot of good music on it, and then lazed and even napped (which I hardly ever do), and watched some bad and some good TV. So lazy. Tomorrow at least I'll be leaving the house as we're going ice-skating at the outdoor rink by the Tower of London! I've always wanted to skate by the Tower and as I'm leaving this year, my friends' were happy to go along with my choice. Should be good.

1. Someone wrote me a really cute Cal and Della ficlet for Yuletide Madness! And it was a sleeping ficlet! I love, love sleeping ficlets and it wasn't even in my Yuletide letter. This person is psychic, clearly.

I have been assembling my Yuletide recs on my delicious page. Didn't get through as much as I had hoped before the reveal - but then the reveal won't stop me continuing to read. *hearts Yuletide so much*

2. Year-end fandom meme:

A pattern will slowly emerge here. It's subtle. ;) )

3. Boris Johnson (Mayor of London) wrote a slightly insane editorial asking for Keith Richards to be given a knighthood. First off, Boris haven't you got better things to be doing? Also, if you knew your Stones history, you'd know how much shit Keith gave Mick for his and I would be so surprised if he accepted it. Still, just WTF?

I thought I had more to link to or mention but I can't remember right now. Most of my tabs are links to pretty pictures on Tumblr or Josh GIFs (*stares* I really need to see Americano .... )

Oh shit, yes, a) I finally saw Daniel Radcliffe on QI! I don't quite know how I missed he was going to be on it Christmas Eve. His extensive knowledge of random facts and nervousness was extremely endearing, and b) I went to a Scott Pilgrim screening and Q&A last night with Edgar Wright. Very cool. Still love the movie and Edgar was adorable, as was the geeky audience. <3

Going out for a few drinks at friends' house in a bit. Should hopefully be a quiet one, but not sure it will work out that way tbh.

Happy New Year, all! Whether it's already gotten to you or will arrive shortly.
aworldinside: (Josh grin)
Hope everyone had a good Christmas/holiday celebration of their choice/Saturday! :)

Mine was pretty good. Went over to a friend's house to have an orphan's Christmas with 2 Kiwis, 2 Aussies and one of the guy's Argentine girlfriend. The food was amazing, and the company was good. I would have probably preferred to head home at the end of the day, but due to the no public transport on the 25th situation in London, I crashed on the couch. I am quite a big fan of Southern trains today though, as they were the only metro train company that ran services today. So, no 40 minute walk in the cold for me. I do however seem to have lost my debit card. *sigh* Slightly inconvenient, but I have a bit of food in the house, a little cash and no real plans for the next few days other than lazing around the house.

On a slightly related point. Yuletide! OMG Yuletide, I love you! I got a really cool Scott Pilgrim fic The Bed with a spot-on Wallace POV and Wallace and Scott banter.

I also seem to have a treat in Yuletide Madness. *hearts fandom forever*

And my recipient left me the cutest comment on my story! Yay. I do however really need to fix a couple of typos. Eeep.

I have only read a few things, but despite everything that's gone on, I'll probably be using delicious to put recs together, because well, habit mostly and tag groups make me happy.

One other things that Christmas requires. A Dr Who Christmas special!

Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol )

I have been munching through Jaffas all day (mmm NZ candy) and just finished a bottle of L&P. Ah, New Zealand. Missing NZ a little bit, but mostly the weather. I am still used to Christmas with picnics and BBQs. ;)

Had to love UK TV's choice of Christmas movies yesterday. From Madagascar, Shrek The Third, The Polar Express (fairly typical) to Edward Scissorhands (Channel 4, naturally) and Die Hard (lol, though I guess technically a little Christmas-y) and Casablanca and Butch Cassidy (still need to see it). Seeing bits of Casablanca yesterday just reminded how much I love it and need to see it again in full. Also, a remake can never happen. Never.

Random link: Been seen in a lot of places, but in case you haven't seen it. Community characters as Avengers. So awesome. IronMan!Jeff. Vision!Abed. Thor!Britta.

Was happy to see Fringe in many a Top 10 of the year in TV list, but oh, I really need to watch some Breaking Bad, don't I?
aworldinside: (Peter gaze)
I tried to keep this as spoiler-free as possible because I wanted to leave it uncut, so hopefully it's worked out okay, but I really needed to get this off my chest:

Dear (certain parts of) Fringe fandom,

What is with this Peter vs. Olivia stuff? Seriously. Either its ‘Olivia is too perfect and Peter is being sidelined and trampled on’ or ‘Peter sucks! He should have instantly known! And will never be good enough for Olivia!!’

Can’t we just accept that they are both awesome imperfect human characters who have both been through a lot in the past season? Most of which has been beyond their control?

Yes, Peter was a little stupid.
Yes, I think there are explanations for it.
Yes, Olivia has every right to be pissed, heart-broken and violated.
Yes, Peter has every right to feel heart-broken, betrayed and manipulated.

It sucks to be both of them right now.

Whether you want them together romantically or not, they should be kick-ass and saving the universe(s) together, damn it. No need to take sides. No need to blame. I mean I don’t necessarily like ‘ship wars but I can sort of get where they’re coming from, this I just don’t get. Friends taking sides after a break-up? Is that a good comparison? I don’t even know.

Is it just that I haven’t been in this deep with an open-canon TV fandom for a few years?

Yours in bafflement and exasperation,

K – who is for an awesome kick-ass Olivia and Peter and if they want to make out occasionally then that’s okay too.

I had a Matchbox 20 song in my head for far too long yesterday because of this Fringe vid. It’s awesome though, despite my slight dislike of the music choice (which can sometimes affect my enjoyment of a vid and sometimes not) and it's a happy team vid, which Fringe fandom needs for all manner of reasons.

Also, the always awesome [livejournal.com profile] obsessive24 vidded to Fringe too. Follow the Cops Back Home. Placebo! Peter/Olivia/Altlivia! Ow, my heart. Awesome vid though, and awesome song.

I have the house to myself for 5 days (2 flatmates in Malta, 1 in Northern Ireland) and while that is awesome, I've been incredibly lazy. Yesterday, I got out of bed at 2pm, wandered down to the supermarket, cooked dinner (vegetarian chili ftw) and then spent untold hours lost in this ONTD post on the 50 Greatest Music Videos of the Decade and spamming my Tumblr with them.

Today, I was meant to be seeing Sherlock Holmes but my friend cancelled as she wasn't feeling well. Was almost tempted to go by myself, but my friend suggested seeing it next week and seems keen to see it, so next week it shall be. So, to get myself out of the house at some point today I went to the library this afternoon and picked up some books, because despite my best efforts, I've still be slack about reading books this year, and there's so many good ones out there I want to read. This was of course after getting out of bed at 1pm after watching The Hangover (not too bad, pretty funny, characters not as big a douches as I was expecting). See? Lazy.

I have also been reading Yuletide fics. Recs are at my delicious. (Is that the correct preposition for delicious? Delicious page? Anyway).

Christmas television has been kind of blah, but I did watch the RSC's latest take on Hamlet starring David Tennant (part of David Tennant Fortnight on the BBC, because seriously, the dude is everywhere). Overall, I liked it, but then it was David Tennant and Patrick Stewart in Hamlet (my favourite Shakespeare play) and at one point David was doing soliloques in jeans, bare feet and messy Doctor-like hair ... I, was never ever going to have a problem with that. *chinhands*

There also might be a small Gossip Girl thing. Clearly I was missing a slightly trashy teen drama in my life. But they're all just so pretty! And Chuck/Nate is awfully intriguing ... and for my sins, so is Serena/Nate, and Chuck/Blair. Yeah, I don't even know.

Tomorrow I shall be spending my New Years Eve bowling in Essex. ;) New Year's Eve's I either do nothing or are totally surreal, this promises to be the latter.
