It's been a quiet three-day weekend. I got some things done but on the whole it's been a lot of spending time around the house, which has been quite nice tbh. I haven't been back at work long enough to really feel the relief of a three day weekend but I'm not complaining. ;)

Fan things:

1. Still watching and enjoying Last Resort, Homeland, Good Wife and Downton Abbey (although I need to catch up on the last two).

2. H50, I'm still watching and ... yeah. Steve and Catherine are cute, and Kono is awesome. The end.

3. I watched the pilot of Elementary and I liked it - Lucy Liu and JLM were both enjoyable to watch - but I don't know that it really grabbed me. Maybe I'll catch up later. Nashville is kinda the same - although Connie Britton is a compelling reason to keep watching. (Friday Night Lights, I'll eventually get to you).

4. I have however found myself watching Revenge (spoilers through 1x08) )

5. Shit. Fringe. Should actually watch 5x01.

6. The Thick of It's Inquiry episode was awesome but emotional viewing (Malcolm feelings!) Not sure how I'm going to handle the series finale next week.

7. ... there are not Teen Wolf fic tabs open in my browser, except there are. But SGA crossovers and frat AUs! I am only so strong!

8. I collapsed in a pile of feelings this afternoon after I discovered there was a Harvey/Donna comment-fic-a-thon going on at [livejournal.com profile] donna_harvey. Lots of H/D fic I hadn't read! Delightful!

Suits 2x10 )

Fangirl Friday last night was great. Politics, hockey, comics and lots of excellent travel advice. <3 you guys.

Not a lot planned this weekend except dinner with my friend tonight. Although I am going to need to leave the house to find breakfast at some point. My pantry is a little bare.

But first I can see me losing some time to Tumblr. Suits summer finale, Jeff Carter's day with the Cup ...

EDIT: I meant to include VVC recs! (so I can close some tabs)

It's All Coming Back to Me Now by [personal profile] trelkez. (Captain America comics, Steve/Bucky)

I am pretty new to Cap comics but I did love this. All the feelings. (And yes it is a vid to the Celine Dion song).

Lateralus by [livejournal.com profile] rhoboat (Fringe)

The visuals in this and the way it's tied together is just stunning.

Girl in the War by [livejournal.com profile] amnisias (Justified, Loretta)

Loretta vid! And to a great Josh Ritter song too.

How I Got Over by [personal profile] heresluck (The Wire, S4)

Just stunning S4 vid. The song choice is perfect and oh god, it brought back the season all over again. So well done.

Parks and Recreation 4x22 )

And I meant to post this last night, but since I didn't I have also watched:

Fringe 4x22 )

No hockey for two days, what is this strange world. Nervous about tomorrow morning. Hope the Rangers can pull it off, even though I would feel for the Caps.

Random Alex O'Loughlin pic: he's quite distracting. He's now shaven off the fauxhawk, which makes me a little sad. He's rocking it here, and it would have been awesome to see him show up the UpFronts with it.
aworldinside: (john sheppard laptop)
It's been a weird week. I've felt unmotivated and blah, and I've also been getting recruitment calls, which is not a bad thing but they're offering to put my name forward for jobs that fit the long-term-slash-help-pay-for-my-trip-to-the-UK criteria but not the in-any-way-advancing-my-career criteria. I spent 2 years overseas doing blah-ish temp admin jobs and I'm over it tbh, but then .... what do I want to do for a job anyway? And fuck do I need to go back and study something? And then I feel guilty because I should feel grateful I'm in a position where I can get a job and yes, blah. Blah, I say.

Vent over.

TV! Hockey! Other distracting things!

Hockey:

I couldn't concentrate on much this afternoon with the truly ridiculous triple fucking overtime Rangers/Caps game going on. Really happy for the Rangers (Gaborik! Some form!) but hard not to feel for the Caps as well. Braden Holtby is a rock-star.

Hope the Flyers can come back motivated tomorrow after losing so badly to the Devils.

I have seen clips, but last night it came to my attention that someone had put the entire NHL 2011 All Star Game Fantasy Draft on YouTube.

Lots of heart-eyes. Lots. They're ridiculous people, and while I knew it happened it was great to watch the whole show and see how it really was everytime someone was picked by Team Lindstrom who wasn't Tazer they'd go for a reaction shot. Amazing. Staals and Patrick Sharp continue to charm me (as sort of does Rick Nash), and lol Ovie taking a picture of Phil Kessel being the last one picked. Also this is far, far from an original thought but holy fuck, Jeff Skinner's smile. Nope. I don't need reminding how old he is. I know. I know.

I open three tabs when I sit down at my desk at the moment. They are GMail, Twitter and ... nhl.com. I have also listened to the Marek vs Wyshynski daily podcast pretty much every morning. Yeah.

And a rec:

I meant to tidy my room tonight - instead I lost hours to this:

Enough To Crush Your Veins (69474 words) by favicondoctor_denmark
Chapters: 9/9
Fandom: Hockey RPF
Rating: Explicit
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Jeff Skinner/Eric Staal
Characters: Jeff Skinner, Eric Staal
Summary:

When Canadian figure skater Jeff Skinner wrecked his knee, he never could have imagined that he'd end up helping pay his way through college as a live-in babysitter for Eric Staal's three-year-old son, Joey.

I read bits in commentfic form and couldn't wait for the whole thing to hit AO3. So, so good. Ridiculous hockey players are ridiculous and I have such a weakness for Staals, and kidfic, and pining and everything this fic is.

Hours well spent but I uh, really should eat something.
aworldinside: (Red profile)
I had a job interview today. I think it went okay. For someone who is a pretty anxious person by nature, I don't get that nervous in job interviews, but as soon as I walk out I start second-guessing everything. It is a job I am very qualified for but I don't know what the competition is like and I said a few weird things. Ugh. I don't know. I'd really quite like the job though, and it's a permanent job. Having one of those again would be novel.

However, if I don't get it, I have an interview next Wednesday for another job. So, things could be worse, I guess. At least I'm getting interviews.

I also made these cookies today. I don't have the best record as far as cookies are concerned, but these turned out really nicely and are quite tasty. Chopping up chocolate pieces worked really well too as they stayed sort of melt-y in the middle for ages. Nom.

I uh may have had a few more than was good for me though because just a tiiiny bit hyped up on sugar right now.

In fandom news, Game of Thrones is back!

Game of Thrones 2x01 - I have read up to the end of AFFC but I'll try to stop myself getting too book spoilery )

Fringe was better this week, but I am at the point where if it stopped at the end of S4, I would be okay with that. I'm still enjoying it don't get me wrong, but not as much as I was and yeah, I'd be okay with that.

I am also up to date with Mad Men, but I don't have a lot to say other than I'm mostly enjoying it. Peggy <3

And I started watching Avatar: the Last Airbender with [livejournal.com profile] gnine last weekend. It's so good. Sokka is my favourite so far, but Zuko is intriguing and Katara is made of awesome.

There's also hockey. Of course.

I keep having Staal thoughts and Staal theories. Eric = troll!Staal. Marc = sensible!Staal (well as sensible as a pro hockey player can be). Jordan = bro!Staal. Jared = Staal Not Appearing in this NHL. This makes sense when you consider which two Staals got arrested during Eric's bachelor party, and well, this video. Troll!Stall and Bro!Stall trolling everyone and calling Patrick Kane a midget and circling him like sharks around a hobbit (how's that for a mental image? Wring-wraiths around a hobbit maybe?) and generally finding themselves hilarious. I for one find it delightful, but I am not objective.

Also, the Philadelphia/Pittsburgh fight was insane. I'm torn between wanting to see them play each other in the playoffs and thinking that it would be an incredibly bad idea. I'm not a huge of fan of either team, but Claude Giroux is adorable and ginger.

I need to pick teams to follow in the playoffs too, because oh, Carolina. (Yes, I hear you, Hawks and Bruins people. We'll see. We'll see).

Random other things:

1.Gyzym's guide to reading the Discworld books is really awesome. It also made me curious why I haven't read Thief of Time - I really should have.

2. The Newroom trailer - but I guess if you have any interest you've probably seen this by now. I'm cautiously optimistic, but then I also liked the pilot for Studio 60.

3. Bad Opinions from History Generator.

Spent the whole day out at brunch and then coffee with friends. However I did make time to see this:

The Hunger Games )

And then this when i got home:

Fringe 3.15 )

Tomorrow: housework and applying for jobs like a m-fucking adult. Joy.

Also, note to the Carolina Hurricanes: Columbus?! You beat Florida but lose by 4 to Columbus?!

Anyone want to take bets on how long it's going to take me to end up with an Eric Staal icon? ;)

I did a March Madness bracket again this year and it was going okay (I was ranked 3rd in a bracket group organised by Pajiba - a pop culture blog I read) but alas not so much today. However the two finalists I picked are still there, so fingers crossed. I did pick UConn correctly last year.
aworldinside: (Olivia)
Fringe: The End of All Things )

Undecided about whether to see Ides of March or Moneyball tomorrow. Maybe. But I do also need to do some things that I avoided today. *sigh* Today I queued up for $20 Arts Festival tickets and went to an interesting theatre show that was kind of an adaption of Hamlet - and kind of about performing Hamlet. Also, there was a Great Dane.

On a total The National kick at the moment. Bought some more of their songs this morning. So good. I was also looking through YT clips and this version of Mr. November (favourite song) is interesting if only for the fact that Matt Berninger manages to keep singing while being fall-down drunk. Literally. He falls down.

I seem to have forgotten about dinner. Silly internet. Silly face of Alex O'Loughlin.

Hawaii Five-0 2x17 - there shall be no discussion of the plot under this cut )

And in the weekend there was this:

Fringe: A Better Human Being )

I enjoyed The Good Wife as well but don't have anything really substantial to say except that I adore Will and Diane's friendship so very much. I am also getting a little over Eli - I hope that changes.

I am also still watching allll the Babylon 5 - I'm now mid S4 which is further than I've watched before and the plotting is just so good - even if the acting can be a little hit and miss and the the 1990's take on future fashion is frightening. I must admit that I spoiled myself completely for the rest of the series last night by reading episode summaries. My need to know overcame my willingness to take the time to watch another season and a half. Impatient? Me? I will watch the rest of course, I can just take it a little slower now. ;)

So um ... food I guess.

I didn't get around to posting about the latest episode of Fringe but suffice to say I pretty much adored every second of it. <3

I meant to be productive tonight and barring cooking myself a quite nice vege curry, I've completely failed. I need to rewrite my CV and look for jobs - my contract expires at the end of March - and ugh adult-ness.

... oh look at episode of Babylon 5 I am half the way through.

It's been a nice weekend; there's been fangirl catch-ups, I finally put together the collage of some of my postcards/tickets/etc from my overseas travels, I watched Mean Girls for the first time (yes I know, it took me long enough) which was hilarious and some internet memes are now making a lot more sense, and today was the Super Bowl, which was a pretty good, at-times-quite-stressful game. I was happy for the Giants, they deserved their win.

Collage pic below if you're curious )

Also um, I just spent the last couple of hours reading Hockey RPF. This runaway!Jeff Skinner fic in fact. Um, it was really good, you guys and I kind of want to know many more things about Eric Staal (other than the fact that he's the captain/older brother figure and he's younger than me). I feel this was slightly inevitable as I've always been tempted by hockey fandom, but I do also blame the fact that it was all over my flist when I caught up this afternoon. (Upside: hockey may distract me from caring too much about H50 ... don't look at me like that, I said may).

I am also starting a Babylon 5 re-watch/watch (I've seen a lot of it but there's holes in my viewing). I love Londo and G'Kar so much, and Ivanonva is all sort of awesome.

I feel there was something else I meant to put in this, but no doubt I won't remember until after I push the post button.

Fringe: Enemy of My Enemy )

Spent the day with friends - had good Mexican food, walked in the sun, watched The King's Speech finally which I really loved. I also tried a deep fried chocolate bar and discovered they weren't quite as gross as I was expecting and um, kind of great. Which is a bad thing because it means I might feel the need to eat another one.
aworldinside: (Peter smiling)
Went to see Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol this afternoon with [livejournal.com profile] gnine. It was a lot of fun - probably the best of all the MI movies - and I am seeing this Jeremy Renner thing, yes I am. Paula Patton and Simon Pegg were awesome too.

Talked a lot of travelling this afternoon too which has motivated me to work on the collage I want to make of some of the postcards and tickets I collected in my travels. Part of me is always going to miss London/New York/Berlin isn't it? *sigh* Ah well.

Fringe: Back To Where You've Never Been )

Finished my first book of the year earlier in the week: The Epic F***ing Twitter Quest of @MayorEmanuel. The book of the Twitter feed! So happy I found out about this book via a Yuletide fic - I loved it! It was also my first experience with Book Depository and I will be using them again. Free shipping! That book only cost me $15 NZ. <3

1. Fringe: Wallflower )

I also saw the promo for what should have been the fall finale, and just, fuck you, Fox. Fuck. You. Now it's January. January.

2. Yuletide sign-up complete. \o/ I was struggling a little for a 4th request but I found one and now I'm pretty excited. The list of fandoms that ended up in my bucket offer was hilarious. To say it was diverse is understating it. My letter will be forth-coming.

3. There exists in the world a photo of Alex O'Loughlin with his tattoos and his scruff and his everything playing an electric guitar. Not helping, Alex. A WORLD of not helping. Ngh. *brain offline*

Included below because of ... reasons )

I need to find August Rush immediately.

4. My laptop scared the hell out of me about 2 hours ago. It beeped and then shut down and then ... nothing. Nothing at all. Cue rending of garments. I finally tried plugging it in without its battery and yes, we have laptop. So it's a battery thing. I'm pretty relieved - although with all things Apple it's not going to be the cheapest thing to replace.

5. I start my new job tomorrow (it's a contract through to the end of March). I was reading up on some things and ahahaha I'm going to be busy and at work far earlier than I am normally. All the coffee. All the coffee. I don't like early morning meetings ... that's going to have to change.

6. Also I just need to say this:

Dear New Zealand,

I hope that the poll showing NZ First closing in on 5% was a grievous statistical error and in no way reflects your current voting intentions.

Did we not learn from last time?! We do not need Winston Peters back in Parliament. *shudders*

Yours in bafflement,

[personal profile] aworldinside

Edit: As [personal profile] china_shop rightly points out in the comments, it would potentially stop National getting an outright majority which is indeed not a bad thing. I just really dislike the idea of Winston in a position with such power all over again, but I guess, democracy can be messy and a proportional voting system is still better than anything else.

1. Fringe: And Those We Leave Behind )

I’ve pretty much made peace with the idea that this might be the last season of Fringe but what Fox are doing by pushing 4.08 out to next year – when it’s really supposed to be the Fall finale – is just full of fail, and doing the show absolutely no favours. This show has a narrative rhythm! It needs favours!

2. Had a veeerry lazy weekend (although there was some AO3 stuff – because yeah, you may have seen) but I did venture out to the Library – avoiding people watching the Santa parade, seriously it’s November – which as it turns out does not hold a copy of The Back-Up Plan. (Not that I was … no, I was looking, he looks so gooood in the pictures I’ve seen). It did however find a copy of The Oyster Farmer. Damn you, O’Loughlin.

3. I also picked up Party Down S1 - Adam Scott and Lizzie Caplan are freakin' delightful.

4. I think The Hunger Games trailer is going to make me finally hunt down the books.

5. I also need to catch up on Homeland, The Good Wife and potentially watch Once Upon A Time. So much TV.

6. This Banana Zucchini Bread/Muffins recipe is goood. I tried it last night. (Dairy free, not gluten free but I think you could easily make it so it is).
aworldinside: (Peter gaze)
Get/together this weekend was awesome. It was great to see people again (for the first time in over two years in most cases) and meet new ones (including [livejournal.com profile] labellementeuse who has been on my flist for years) and it was just a lot of fun. Lots of great discussion, fun panels and pretty new fandoms to explore. (I will end up reading XMen: First Class, Thor or Avengers fic soon, I know I will. It's pretty surprising I haven't fallen down those holes yet actually). I think my Fringe pimp went okay but I really wish I'd included more video and I kept thinking of things I should have mentioned after I finished, but it was a good experience and I'd be keen to do one again.

However, despite the awesome it was a very full-on weekend (9am-9pm both days, including travel time) so tonight I went home, had a simple dinner and just chilled out and it was just what I needed.

A lot of that time was spent reading fic, two of which were amazing:

1. Early Returns (15565 words) by faviconrageprufrock
Fandom: Inception (2010)
Rating: Mature
Warning: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings

I haven't read Inception fic in months and months but I'm so glad I took the time to read this. Arthur/Eames, Newspaper AU. Oh, Arthur. <3

2. All The Earth Awaits Thee (Hawaii Five-0, Steve/Danny). Written by a yet-to-be-revealed author for [livejournal.com profile] h50_exchange.

Oh. This is just, heart-breaking but amazingly written and so real. Steve is diagnosed with leukemia and it's so them. It's so well done but also feels so personal and I really can't recommend it enough. Also, while heart-wrenching, it does have a happy ending.

I also found time to watch new Fringe.

Are you interested in volunteering as a coder or tester for the Archive of Our Own? Do you have questions about our development process, or would you like to learn more about how archive features go from idea to reality? The Accessibility, Design and Technology Committee will be holding an open house to talk about our work and answer any questions you may have!

All are welcome! The chat will be held on Sunday, October 30th at 20:00 UTC (what time is it in my timezone?) in OTW's public chatroom on Campfire. The chatroom can be accessed at https://fanarchive.campfirenow.com/e79cc

I saw the latest H50 sneak peek - well okay the first one, as after seeing that I decided I was going to need to watch the episode either in a very calm place or with alcohol and as a result I just couldn't quite face the second peek. Prove me wrong, show. Please? I don't like character assassination of my favourite character. Cheers.

However talking of H50 - whoever put these two things together is awesome. 10 Things and Steve/Danny are not two thing I would have put together - but it's awesome and adorable, and the .gif is perfect. Their faces!

Living with Chronic Bitchface - this comic illustrates something that happens to me ALL THE TIME - it happened to me today in fact.

For a movie that involves Chris Pine and Tom Hardy in suits blowing up shit the This Means War Trailer looks pretty bad. I mean, just the whole concept, the people in it look very pretty, but I don't think that's going to be enough. Fandom might have fun with it though.

I am however going to pay to see what I imagine is going to be a horrendous take on The Three Musketeers, so maybe you can't judge my taste. ;) It's Matthew MacFayden's fault - and the fact that Christoph Waltz is playing Richelieu which is amazing casting.

I started watching Breaking Bad tonight too - watched 4 episodes. Insane television but amazingly done. I can see why people go on about it.

In life, eh flat hunting. I was in a good mood and saw a couple of really nice ones yesterday and even talked West Wing marathoning and Tyrion Lannister at one flat (seriously nice place too, although the bond is probably beyond my means). So, hopefully, I guess? Ugh. I am so over this.

Work is fine, if getting a little stressful but la la I am at the bottom of the food chain and just doing what I'm told on this one. The personalities in the team and the office politics are just a little, wow.

Two close friends in town this weekend for another friend's birthday party. I may uh, have a medieval dress hired and uh, there may be blue hair. For no real reason other than I really want blue hair. Or rainbow hair! It's a thing. I blame Scott Pilgrim.

Also, someone just linked me to a 85,000 word Steve/Tony fic by an author whose fics I already know I like. Oh, sleep? Getting other things done? Haha.
