Totally avoiding people tonight. I was super grumpy today while at yum cha with friends, but I'm feeling better after some internet, some chocolate and curling up in a warm bed.

Have some Festivids recs:

To Make You Feel My Love (Sportsnight: ensemble)

I wasn't sure about this when I read what the song was (not too big on country songs tbh and a song I dislike can take me right out of a vid) but OMG this was amazing. It doesn't focus on just one relationship but it touches a little on so many little moments of love in the show's run. Just, amazing. It made me want to re-watch episodes and Daaaan. <3

I uh may have watched this a few times and plan to watch it a few times more before I close the tab.

Running Up That Hill (Spooks: Tom, Danny, Zoe)

I loved this show in S1-3 (after that I sort of stopped following it so closely) and it's where I developed my still standing crush on Matthew MacFadyen and this vid does such a great job of capturing Tom, Danny and Zoe's pain and what they went through. All the feelings. Oh, Tom. I might need to rewatch. Great song choice too.

What a Man (Pride and Prejudice 1995: Elizabeth/Darcy)

Yes someone did vid Pride and Prejudice to the Salt 'n' Pepa song. Yes, it's awesome.

Doomsday (Independence Day: gen)

Awesome editing and look to this. I almost want to see this ridiculous movie again now, if only for the nostalgia value.

A Little Less Conversation (Yes Minister: gen)

Yes (Prime) Minister vid! Emphasises the facial expressions of Jim, Bernard and Sir Humprhrey and it's so well done. Sir Humphrey is awesome. <3

Fringe: Enemy of My Enemy )

Spent the day with friends - had good Mexican food, walked in the sun, watched The King's Speech finally which I really loved. I also tried a deep fried chocolate bar and discovered they weren't quite as gross as I was expecting and um, kind of great. Which is a bad thing because it means I might feel the need to eat another one.

Yesterday was Sherlock and The Good Wife. I liked the episode (yes only liked, I am totally suffering from Moffat Fatigue), but I adored Martin Freeman. The Good Wife was a fun episode, but I am very interested to see how the long-game plays out.

Today was a work-day that needed beer afterwards. *sigh* People.

I had plans for today. Plans, I tell you. And then I found out the H50 big bang fics had been revealed. Bang (I did that unintentionally I swear). Day gone.

Two recs:

Happiness is Homemade (41804 words) by faviconsirona, faviconellievolia
Fandom: Hawaii Five-0 (2010)
Rating: Explicit
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Steve McGarrett/Danny "Danno" Williams, Chin Ho Kelly/Malia
Characters: Danny "Danno" Williams, Kono Kalakaua, Chin Ho Kelly, Steve McGarrett, Grace Williams, John McGarrett, Mrs McGarrett, Rachel Edwards, Stan Edwards, Mary Ann McGarrett, Malia Waincroft, Original Characters
Summary:

It's not easy, running a Jersey-style bakery in Hawai'i. Things get a little easier (and a whole lot more fun) once Danny meets Chin and Kono's friend, the one who enjoys leaning against his glass cases despite all of Danny's dire warnings, and starts food fights for no reason whatsoever.

Bakery AU! This is 41,000 words of so much UST and it's pretty much an angst-free zone. Delightful.

it's not what you're sure of (it's what you don't know) (44012 words) by faviconsomehowunbroken
Fandom: Hawaii Five-0 (2010)
Rating: Explicit
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Steve McGarrett/Danny "Danno" Williams, Mary Ann McGarrett/Adam "Toast" Charles
Characters: Steve McGarrett, Danny "Danno" Williams, Chin Ho Kelly, Adam "Toast" Charles, Kono Kalakaua, Mary Ann McGarrett, Kamekona, Mamo
Summary:

Art thief Steve McGarrett and his team come up against FBI Special Agent Danny Williams, and things spin wildly out of control from there.

So well done. Banter, plot, amazing-ness.

Oh, I also watched the Moonlight pilot (no seriously, fuck you Alex O'Loughlin the things I watch for your stupid face) and ... it was pretty bad. Hilariously bad. Their was Evanescence at the end. In something that aired in 2007. Saying that, Alex is perfectly watchable and it also has Jason Dohring and yes, okay I'm probably going to keep watching.

The wind finally died down. OMG no 80km/h gusts slamming the house. Happiness.

Haha. The song iTunes is playing is strangely appropriate.

Went to see Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol this afternoon with [livejournal.com profile] gnine. It was a lot of fun - probably the best of all the MI movies - and I am seeing this Jeremy Renner thing, yes I am. Paula Patton and Simon Pegg were awesome too.

Talked a lot of travelling this afternoon too which has motivated me to work on the collage I want to make of some of the postcards and tickets I collected in my travels. Part of me is always going to miss London/New York/Berlin isn't it? *sigh* Ah well.

Fringe: Back To Where You've Never Been )

Finished my first book of the year earlier in the week: The Epic F***ing Twitter Quest of @MayorEmanuel. The book of the Twitter feed! So happy I found out about this book via a Yuletide fic - I loved it! It was also my first experience with Book Depository and I will be using them again. Free shipping! That book only cost me $15 NZ. <3

Yuletide reveal! I wrote three things this year.

My original assignment was:

Been Holding Out So Long (1835 words) by faviconaworldinside
Fandom: State of Play (TV)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Cal McCaffrey/Della Smith
Characters: Cal McCaffrey, Della Smith, Dan Foster, Cameron Foster
Summary: Despite Cameron's protestations to the contrary, people did actually miss Cal.

I quite like how this came out. I think my Cal/Della feelings a bit odd within the small fandom, but I think this was subtle enough. I especially liked writing Cameron.

Thanks so much to [personal profile] stickmarionette for looking over this for me. <3

My pinch hit was:

Forces de la nature (1012 words) by faviconaworldinside
Fandom: A Place of Greater Safety - Hilary Mantel
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Camille Desmoulins/Comte de Mirabeau
Summary: He was a force of nature - not unlike Camille himself - even if sometimes it was the nature of quite some different place altogether.

This I admit, was a bit harder to write but I eventually settled on something (just sneaking in under the deadline) that I think worked out okay. Camille <3

And I also wrote a small treat:

Super(hero)nanny (300 words) by faviconaworldinside
Fandom: The Avengers (2012)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Phil Coulson
Summary: Agent Coulson tries to have a night off. The operative word there being 'tries.'

I've been in a weird mood all day. I've had the flat to myself since the 31st which on the whole has been awesome, but I also started missing having people around. But then at the same time people on the internet were really annoying me (just in general, no one on LJ) and I didn't feel I would be the best company either. So I sat on the balcony in the sunshine reading a history book and getting a little sunburnt. Things could have been worse. ;)

I have to go to work tomorrow. *sigh*

Back in Wellington!

I had a good time in Christchurch on the whole, but I am so glad to be a home. I've got the house to myself and I've made pizza, and eaten chocolate and there may have been a tiny bit of passionfruit vodka as well. I am then going to continue my re-watch of Band of Brothers (so good, and hi baby!Damian Lewis) because I am embracing an anti-social New Year's Eve. Whole-heartedly.

2011 has had its ups and downs from earthquakes and broken hometowns, to leaving the UK, to moving back to NZ to everything in between. I think my highlight was my trip to US - one I've been meaning to make since I was small - I want to go back so badly, but I am so grateful I got a chance to see it at all The lowlight is I imagine pretty self-explanatory. Oh, Christchurch.

I kept meaning to do a fandom end-of-year meme and it just never happened.

However, I did just see this general RL end of year meme pop up on my flist:

2011: broken hometowns, travelling, returning to NZ )

I may have watched all of Downton Abbey from S1 through to the Christmas Special while on holiday. Oops? ;) Lots of love. Matthew! Mary! Anna! Sybil! While I adore Matthew/Mary, I also see interesting femslash possibilities. Hmm. Anyway, it's awesome, and Maggie Smith is amazing. <3!

-

Yuletide must have kick-started my languishing writerly tendencies, because I wrote 350 words of H50 fic earlier today and I still really want to write something about Steve and Jenna because I remain fascinated by their friendship/relationship, and I'm totally going to sign up for [livejournal.com profile] picfor1000.

Talking of Yuletide: my recs are on pinboard. Some awesome fic, especially the @mayoremanuel one. That was fucking amazing, and made me order the book mentioned in the notes. Oh, and Blackadder at the Occupy movement - that was genius too.

Hope everyone had/is having a great Christmas/holiday celebration of their choice/Sunday! :D

My day was low-key but nice. Got to meet my brother's new girlfriend and had a nice dinner, and then spent the afternoon in front of the TV watching gift DVDs. We had an awesome run actually. X-Men First Class (even more slashy on a second viewing, which I didn't think was possible), 5 episodes of Downton Abbey S1 (Sybil! Anna! Gwen! Matthew! - yes I am getting sucked in) and then the ultimate in Christmas movies was on TV, Die Hard. It was even topped off by TV4 playing 'Abed's Uncontrollable Xmas.'

And now there is Yuletide.

I got given this awesome Carmen Sandiego world-building fic.

Player Status: Offline (2323 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Carmen Sandiego, Zack (Carmen Sandiego), Ivy (Carmen Sandiego), The Chief

The world doesn't stop running when the Player is away from the keyboard.

So well done, and has little links to let you learn more, and I loved it. I did not expect to get this request and I'm so happy I did. :D Love Yuletide.

One of my recipients liked her fic a lot too. Now, just have to wait on the other. :)

Now, allll the fic. And possibly some Boxing Day shopping.

I was thinking I'd catch up on The Good Wife soon (last ep I've seen: 3.01 - oops) but then I remembered there was new Homeland, and I have Breaking Bad from my friend, and ... the list goes on.

This pretty awesome mash-up of 2011 movies made me realise I haven't seen that many movies this year. I might try and see either Submarine or Beginners - probably the latter, the plot looks interesting and Melanie Laurent is in it. I loved her so much in Inglorious Basterds. <3

Dear Yuletide author,

Hi! Thank you so much for offering to write one of these awesome things. <3 Apologies for the delayed letter.

'Ship wise, I like slash (both sorts), gen and het. Please don't feel you have to make it 'shippy if you'd rather keen if more gen. If you are making it 'shippy, I don't like incest, rape, non-con, and I do like a good threesome. But don't feel you have to make it porn-y (writing porn is hard, dude), at all.

I am okay with character death and angst. Don't feel you have to make it all rainbows and happy endings if that's not where your muse is directing you. However, saying that I am also a huge sap and love my happy fluffy fic as well.

Random other things I like: Political intrigue, banter, competence, backstory, and snark.

Also, I am absolutely fine with AUs and crossovers. Love them in fact. If you see crossover potential with another fandom you know I'm familiar with, go with it.

Fandom specifics: A Place of Greater Safety, The Good Wife, Elenium/Tamuli, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? )

Thank you again, you rock!

Yuletide author: my letter will be in the next post. Sorry for the delay. <3

New job is ... not much like my old job. More responsibility, more expected of me and a lot to learn in a short space of time. I knew I was being thrown in the deep end, and oh I am. I'm enjoying it though. My manager is great and I get to work with some cool people who I've worked with before. In some ways the organisation hasn't changed much but in some ways it has changed massively.

1. Fringe: Wallflower )

I also saw the promo for what should have been the fall finale, and just, fuck you, Fox. Fuck. You. Now it's January. January.

2. Yuletide sign-up complete. \o/ I was struggling a little for a 4th request but I found one and now I'm pretty excited. The list of fandoms that ended up in my bucket offer was hilarious. To say it was diverse is understating it. My letter will be forth-coming.

3. There exists in the world a photo of Alex O'Loughlin with his tattoos and his scruff and his everything playing an electric guitar. Not helping, Alex. A WORLD of not helping. Ngh. *brain offline*

Included below because of ... reasons )

I need to find August Rush immediately.

4. My laptop scared the hell out of me about 2 hours ago. It beeped and then shut down and then ... nothing. Nothing at all. Cue rending of garments. I finally tried plugging it in without its battery and yes, we have laptop. So it's a battery thing. I'm pretty relieved - although with all things Apple it's not going to be the cheapest thing to replace.

5. I start my new job tomorrow (it's a contract through to the end of March). I was reading up on some things and ahahaha I'm going to be busy and at work far earlier than I am normally. All the coffee. All the coffee. I don't like early morning meetings ... that's going to have to change.

6. Also I just need to say this:

Dear New Zealand,

I hope that the poll showing NZ First closing in on 5% was a grievous statistical error and in no way reflects your current voting intentions.

Did we not learn from last time?! We do not need Winston Peters back in Parliament. *shudders*

Yours in bafflement,

[personal profile] aworldinside

Edit: As [personal profile] china_shop rightly points out in the comments, it would potentially stop National getting an outright majority which is indeed not a bad thing. I just really dislike the idea of Winston in a position with such power all over again, but I guess, democracy can be messy and a proportional voting system is still better than anything else.
Red profile
I came onto LJ looking for H50 squee (because the episode was ridiculous and Steeeve) but instead got lost in a wave of OTW elections/AO3 posts. So many feelings, and so many people talking about people I know and just, yeah. This is the first time fandom drama/wank (and that's not meant disparagingly or to say that people's posts aren't making good/fair/informative points) has felt so personal and yes I know it's not meant that way but I know people they're talking about and if you're saying the site hasn't been tested properly then I'm sorry, that does involve me quite a lot and this is in addition to what I saw over the weekend where some people were far from polite about things, and being this close to it it's just not that nice. So, yes I have a lot of feelings on it, and if someone wants my opinion/is curious (hey I'm nosy too) about any of it feel free to email/pm/whatever me and I'll talk about it.

I might post something about the whole thing later, I might not.

Anyway, now I'm just going to jump up and down about Steve and Danny being married okay? Okay.

I also saw Drive tonight. Good movie, violent like woah (it doesn't start off that way, but trust me, it is). The suspense was built really well too, in a No Country For Old Men sort of way.

Before that was really good tofu udon and I bought myself a copy of 'The Hunger Games' after watching the trailer for the movie. Loving it so far. Can see why people have gone on and on about the series.

1. Fringe: And Those We Leave Behind )

I’ve pretty much made peace with the idea that this might be the last season of Fringe but what Fox are doing by pushing 4.08 out to next year – when it’s really supposed to be the Fall finale – is just full of fail, and doing the show absolutely no favours. This show has a narrative rhythm! It needs favours!

2. Had a veeerry lazy weekend (although there was some AO3 stuff – because yeah, you may have seen) but I did venture out to the Library – avoiding people watching the Santa parade, seriously it’s November – which as it turns out does not hold a copy of The Back-Up Plan. (Not that I was … no, I was looking, he looks so gooood in the pictures I’ve seen). It did however find a copy of The Oyster Farmer. Damn you, O’Loughlin.

3. I also picked up Party Down S1 - Adam Scott and Lizzie Caplan are freakin' delightful.

4. I think The Hunger Games trailer is going to make me finally hunt down the books.

5. I also need to catch up on Homeland, The Good Wife and potentially watch Once Upon A Time. So much TV.

6. This Banana Zucchini Bread/Muffins recipe is goood. I tried it last night. (Dairy free, not gluten free but I think you could easily make it so it is).

Also can I just say how weird it is to regularly follow a show on CBS - because um, there's been 8 new episodes in a row, and as someone who usually only regularly keeps up with a FOX show this is incredibly weird to me. No mini-hiatuses, no baseball, just ... new episodes. Weird.

I had an afogato flavoured ice-cream (Kapiti <3) at 9pm. This may have been an error.

Get/together this weekend was awesome. It was great to see people again (for the first time in over two years in most cases) and meet new ones (including [livejournal.com profile] labellementeuse who has been on my flist for years) and it was just a lot of fun. Lots of great discussion, fun panels and pretty new fandoms to explore. (I will end up reading XMen: First Class, Thor or Avengers fic soon, I know I will. It's pretty surprising I haven't fallen down those holes yet actually). I think my Fringe pimp went okay but I really wish I'd included more video and I kept thinking of things I should have mentioned after I finished, but it was a good experience and I'd be keen to do one again.

However, despite the awesome it was a very full-on weekend (9am-9pm both days, including travel time) so tonight I went home, had a simple dinner and just chilled out and it was just what I needed.

A lot of that time was spent reading fic, two of which were amazing:

1. Early Returns (15565 words) by faviconrageprufrock
Fandom: Inception (2010)
Rating: Mature
Warning: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Summary: Thinking that a reporter genuinely likes you is pretty much on par with feeling like you really are special to that stripper.

I haven't read Inception fic in months and months but I'm so glad I took the time to read this. Arthur/Eames, Newspaper AU. Oh, Arthur. <3

2. All The Earth Awaits Thee (Hawaii Five-0, Steve/Danny). Written by a yet-to-be-revealed author for [livejournal.com profile] h50_exchange.

Oh. This is just, heart-breaking but amazingly written and so real. Steve is diagnosed with leukemia and it's so them. It's so well done but also feels so personal and I really can't recommend it enough. Also, while heart-wrenching, it does have a happy ending.

I also found time to watch new Fringe.

Are you interested in volunteering as a coder or tester for the Archive of Our Own? Do you have questions about our development process, or would you like to learn more about how archive features go from idea to reality? The Accessibility, Design and Technology Committee will be holding an open house to talk about our work and answer any questions you may have!

All are welcome! The chat will be held on Sunday, October 30th at 20:00 UTC (what time is it in my timezone?) in OTW's public chatroom on Campfire. The chatroom can be accessed at https://fanarchive.campfirenow.com/e79cc

Because time-zones are annoying I won't be there, but some other lovely fellow AD&T members will be, so come along if you're curious or have questions. :)

My RL friend has specifically asked me to have brunch with her tomorrow to explain the plot of Fringe! (Well S3 anyway). This is excellent preparation for my get_together presentation which I will definitely be working on tomorrow. Definitely.

I also just figured out that one of the attendees is a fellow OTW Committee member too. Really happy to be meeting more OTW people in RL.

My day was decidedly blah so I came home, ate junk food and watched Hawaii Five-0.

Which nicely obliged by being full of Alex O'Loughlin being ridiculous and attractive, which is sometimes all I ask of it )

I'm also slowly catching up on Dr Who (still not loving it, but it is good) and The Good Wife (pretty damn awesome).

Other than that, uh NZ won a World Cup (just - oh so just) and the All Blacks were pretty adorable afterwards and I finally have a bed. OMG. Finally.
